Robert Bunsen invented the Bunsen burner. That’s about all I know about the guy. He’s dead. Today is his 200th birthday and Google is celebrating that fact with a Google Doodle.

Robert Bunsen was an important scientist. Before Bunsen, scientists were forced to warm test tubes by rubbing them up with their hands. That is all.

The Change Raising Scam

The classic “change raising” scam works differently than “short changing,” but the net effect is the same.
The grifter approaches a sucker (an overworked, busy, distracted and disinterested cashier is ideal). He asks, “Can you give me a ten for ten singles?” Sounds fair. The cashier always needs singles, so she agrees. She hands him a TEN, he accidently hands her NINE singles and a TEN. “Count it, please,” the grifter pleads.
When she counts, she discovers NINETEEN dollars. The grifter says, “Here, if I give you another single, that will make 20.”
And she hands him a crisp TWENTY.
And loses TEN bucks. How?

Cashier receives, $19. ………. +19

Cashier gives $10 ………….. +9

Cashier receives $1 …….. +10

Cashier gives $20 ……… -10

Or the other way around …

Grifter gives $19 ……. -19

Grifter gets $10 …….. -9

Grifter gives $1 ……. -10

Grifter gets $20 ….. + $20
